The Irony…..

June 25, 2013

This morning a copy of Michel Foucault’s Security, Territory, Population: Lectures at the College De France, 1977-78 dropped through my letter box.  This is one of his main discussions of ‘governmentality’ and the state.

Have a look at the bottom of the title page…

It’s translated into English courtesy of a Quai D’Orsay cultural diplomacy fund….so even if Foucault’s point was to reveal the operation of power the state still exploits him.

  1. …and Foucault made part of his early academic career in Uppsala, Sweden, as a French lecturer paid by the French state… Well at least he did see the cage he was in. Most don’t.

One more thing: the translation seems to be funded through the embassy in London. Which brings forward the question of the embassies’ and other organizations’ autonomy in PD efforts regarding their central administration at home. I would say that the French embassy in London has a great deal of autonomy, not as to its own funding, but as to what they do with this funding.
